The default marketing report is a list of top pages and a traffic line. It is easy to produce and nearly impossible to act on, because it answers a question nobody asked: which individual URL was busiest?
If the work is organised by subject, the reporting should be too.
What cluster-level reporting shows
Group every page into the subject it belongs to, then report each subject as a unit: impressions, clicks, the number of distinct queries it appears for, and the enquiries attributable to it.
The number of distinct queries is the one most reports omit and the one that moves first. A subject being recognised shows up as breadth — the same pages appearing for more variations of the question — well before it shows up as clicks.
Three numbers per subject
- 1Coverage: how many of the planned pages exist, and how many of the questions in the map are actually answered somewhere.
- 2Visibility: impressions and distinct queries for the cluster as a whole, tracked over time.
- 3Result: enquiries, sign-ups or sales that touched any page in the cluster.
Three numbers per subject, four subjects, and the whole programme fits on one page without anyone needing to interpret a chart.
Attribution, honestly
Someone reads two articles, leaves, searches your brand name three weeks later and enquires. Every analytics tool will credit that to direct or branded search, and the articles will look like they did nothing.
There is no perfect fix. Two things help. Add one optional question to your enquiry form asking how they came across you — the answers are messy but revealing. And watch branded search volume: when non-brand coverage is working, brand searches rise a couple of months behind it.
Report the decisions, not just the data
A dashboard is a reference, not a report. The report is the paragraph explaining what changed, what we think caused it, and what will be done differently next cycle.
“If a report contains no decision, it is a screenshot with a covering email.”
That paragraph is also the check on whether anyone is thinking. Charts can be produced automatically forever without anyone reading them. A written recommendation cannot.
Worth remembering
- Group reporting by cluster, not by URL.
- Distinct queries per cluster is the leading indicator; it moves before clicks.
- Ask on the enquiry form how people found you — attribution tools will not tell you.
- Every report needs a written decision, not just charts.
